Writing Assignment Race And Sports - 1505 Words

Exam # 3: ESS 330 Writing assignment: Race and Sports Race is defined as a category of people regarded as socially distinct because they share genetically transmitted traits believed to be important by people in a society with power and influence (PPT slide ESS330). In sports, race has and continues to be snared with question, but as former Israeli Olympic athlete Gideon Ariel underscores: â€Å"I know that the American system is very sensitive to statements of black and white. But you cannot defy science. You cannot just say that day is night and night is day. These are facts. And I think it s to the advantage of the black athletes to be proud that God was on their side (Entine, 2000). Many studies of race and sports have used a social definition linking race to the concept of different human bodies (Danielson, 2014). However, Sociologists recognizing the lack of biological evidence for racial classifications have attributed race as connected to other social forces, is unstable, and constantly changing (Cole N, 2015). Thus social cl assifications used for years, which convey the message of black athletes, being in minority, are inferior and at a disadvantage due to poor health, lack of resources, fear of losing cultural identity, poverty and prejudices against participation have now been replaced with definite messages of black athletes having natural physical abilities and their biology made for endurance not seen in whiteShow MoreRelatedI Never Had An Effective English Teacher1564 Words   |  7 Pageswith trees from start to finish.
